HEADS FOR SALE - Chiao Chiao shines in offbeat Shaw Bros. adventure

HEADS FOR SALE (1970) is distinguished by two contributions—it's got fight direction by Simon Hsu (aka Hsu Er Niu), the talented but unsung fight choreographer responsible for the action in such other 1970s Shaw Bros. adventures as DUEL FOR GOLD, BROTHERS FIVE, AMBUSH, THE FLYING GUILLOTINE, and A TASTE OF COLD STEEL, and its lead actress is Chiao Chiao, who normally played the swordsman's loyal girlfriend (ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, THE ASSASSIN). Here Chiao Chiao gets to be a swordswoman herself and puts on quite a good show for the most part. She plays the daughter of a reformed bandit (Ching Miao) and when her marriage proposal is reportedly rejected by a local hero, she goes ballistic and attacks his villa with swords in hand trying to kill him. It's all a misunderstanding and the hero (played by Korean actor Chen Liang) spends the rest of the movie trying to make amends with her. But the heroine's chance assist of a peasant husband whose wife has been taken by local gangsters to pay off gambling debts leads to a series of escalating confrontations between the good guys and the gang leader's growing band of thugs (one of whom is kung fu great Chen Sing). After numerous contrived twists and turns in which the screenwriter brings in new sets of characters to keep things moving every time the plot hits a dead end, it all culminates in a big battle at the villains' stronghold with dozens of combatants leaping, flipping, slashing, stabbing and dismembering with glee. Finally, the heroine and the lead villain have a dramatic duel on a rope bridge over a perilous gorge—filmed on location.

The title refers to a scene where the heroine announces "heads for sale" after she's beheaded two of her opponents in a fight at the villain's headquarters and then attempts to get herself arrested with one of the heads so she can join the hero in jail to help rescue him and use the other head to get a local doctor framed so he can join them in jail as well and cure the ailing hero. (I told you it gets contrived, but at least it's never boring.)

If you don't demand too much from the storyline and don't mind the B-list Shaw cast, there's a fast pace, short running time (81 min.) and lots of action, much of it filmed on outdoors locations. Chiao Chiao was one of the studio's more serious actresses and it's a treat to see her cut loose here and have some fun as a high-leaping, horse-riding, temperamental swordfighting heroine at the center of the action. She's no Cheng Pei Pei, but she's certainly good enough for this film.

Very underrated, and unknown

A beautiful story, and superb tension, especially the last part of the movie. One of the best movies that Gregory Peck was ever cast. Eva-Marie Saint is excellent as the pleading mother, who desperately wants to leave Arizona. Robert Forester, as Gregory Peck's good friend was also very good in this film.

The marauding Apache, never seen until the last few minutes of the film, leaves a trail of death behind him everywhere he goes.

Great locations, excellent camera work, and a very tight script makes this a very original movie and easy to watch over and over.

This is a stand out film that no one knows. Too bad!!

Flawed, yet still impressive romance

Although not up to the excellence of the classic 1936 film starring Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux, this remake of the tragic romance between Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria and commoner Maria Vetsera is still quite compelling. Omar Sharif is burdened with the worst haircut imaginable, yet when he looks longingly at lovely Catherine Deneuve, it should send your heart fluttering. And while Maria isn't as strongly written as the character should be, Deneuve projects innocent maturity beautifully. Ava Gardner and James Mason don't have much to do, but James Robertson Justice is a joy as Prince Edward of England. Extraordinary production values make it a visual delight. Finally, while the script fails to properly explain the political situation that would drive Rudolph to his drastic decision, director Terence Young builds the tension to heartbreaking pathos, with the final moments fully worthy of a great tearjerker.

Since she was a child, Natalie Miller has always thought she was an ugly ducking. Despite her mother's encouragement that she will grow up to be pretty, Natalie has never believed it will happen. She rents a Greenwich Village apartment from an eccentric landlady and gets a job at the Topless Bottom Club. She rides a motorcycle to work, decorates her loft with a moose head, and rides up and down a dumbwaiter to get to her apartment. There Natalie meets David an artist, and the two have a love affair before she discovers he is married.

No Way An Ugly Duckling

The good news: Patty Duke redeems herself as an actress after her admittedly "bad work" in "Valley of the Dolls." The bad news: hardly anyone went to see this in theaters. That's a shame because there's much to commend this film. Most of that centers around Duke's performance (actually, they're all top notch performances here). She has to convince us she's unattractive, vulnerable, yet no weakling by any stretch of the imagination. Yet I never felt entirely sorry for her because she seemed well equipped to weather the putdowns that come from being an ugly girl. I ended up liking Natalie because Duke makes her likable -- yeah, she's got a heart of gold but she's got spirit, too. There are all kinds of nice moments here but I especially appreciate the scene at the Hoboken ferry landing where she goes to see if her fictional Prince Charming will actually materialize. She won a Golden Globe award for this performance and it stands as probably her best work as an adult. From here she moved into what is arguably her second best adult role, in the TV film, "My Sweet Charlie." She won an emmy for that one. About this time she also did a wonderful job in a PBS film called "Birdbath." Again, she's paired with Farentino and again, she's a plain Jane from New York City, but this time with an entirely different psychological make-up from Natalie and with a horrible secret. Duke sure showed a lot of potential for the big screen...too bad it never materialized. And it's too bad this film isn't available on VHS.

Brando was a stud here!

I just saw this DVD for the first time. I couldn't believe that in 1968 at age 44 that Marlon Brando was in such outstanding shape. He was fit and trim and blonde. His acting was unbelievable. In one particular scene with Jess Hahn, Brando is at his best.

This "kidnap" film has a strong supporting cast which gives equally impressive performances. Richard Boone gives a very creepy performance as a sadistic psycho. He reminds me a lot of Alan Arkin's role in Wait Until Dark. Jess Hahn is great as the pot-bellied brother of Rita Moreno.

The Night Before The Following Day is one of Marlon Brando's top 10 acting roles.

Eager To Stretch, Van Dyke Strains Badly

It is obvious that Van Dyke was begging his agent to get him something different to prove that he could play a lead character that was unlikable. He must've admired his friend Andy Griffith's bravura performance in "A Face In The Crowd" very much. Friend Carl Reiner directed him in the overlooked gem, "The Comic" in 1968. Van Dyke and the script were perfect, but the movie bombed, thus threatening to pigeonhole him more than ever in Disney-ish tripe. Mind you, I'm just extrapolating from the facts I know, but it sure seems that Van Dyke was a desperate man when he agreed to star in this uneven amalgamation of nihilist farce, cultural satire, and moralistic claptrap. And Van Dyke seemed determined to force the darkest side of his unreasonably unlikable and self-destructive character down the audience's throat. I found it very hard to take in the theaters as an adolescent, but recently watched it on tape to see if I felt the same way as an adult. Not quite. As an adult, I found it a fascinating time capsule but otherwise, an all-too-annoying and impossible attempt to capture the essence of theater d'absurd with American TV actors, then compounding its own futility by eventually copping out on its only reason to exist.

Avoid this mess unless you are doing a film studies paper.

a touching and simple story.

An old farmhand wants to save his old horse from being gored in the bull ring. He leaves everything to lead Ulysse, the horse, to the safety and freedom of the Camargue National Park. Beautiful images, excellent acting, with a little bit of comedy thrown in and music by the great Georges Brassens.
