This is painful...

Quick cash-ins were common back in the day, but some were actually good. This is not.

Jeff Cameron plays Sartana in an embarrassingly phony blond wig and a white outfit that looks nothing like the Sartana we knew (what were they thinking, that no one would notice?).

The plot concerns a villainous black robed figure, with long grey hair, known as The Mormon who has been organizing the kidnapping of various individuals (by talking to his henchmen from behind a portrait with the eyes cut out) and getting huge ransoms. During his last effort, Sartana interferes and now the Mormon must put together a band of stone cold killers to take him out before the next big job.

Flatly acted and directed with a minimum of production values (not always a bad thing, though), this is probably exactly what non-fans think a Spag is: A boring rip-off with a laughable villain and no budget.

If you've never seen a Sartana movie, please, do not start here! Look for the one's with Gianni (John) Garko and prepare to get hooked!

Early Giallo worth a look

Italian Gialli from the late 1960s differed in a number of ways from those made in the wake of Dario Argento's BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE. Before gore and set-piece slaying, gialli like Umberto Lenzi's ORGASMO and Lucio Fulci's ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER were bloodless, psychological murder mysteries that relied on plot twists, sexual situations, and irony for their thrills and INTERRABANG is more of the same with director Giuliano Biagetti making the most of an extremely low budget, a trio of beautiful European starlets, and an enigmatic premise. The interrabang is non-standard English punctuation (a combination question mark and exclamation point) that never caught on and was probably the equivalent of today's WTF. That's what viewers will wonder when Fabrizio, a hip fashion photographer, sails to a secluded island with his wife, Anna (Beba Loncar), his model/girlfriend, Margarita (Shoshana Cohen), and his nubile sister-in-law, Valeria (Haydee Politoff) for a photo shoot but bails out to get help when their boat has engine trouble -knowing an escaped convict is in the vicinity. The bored babes, left to their own devices, soon strike up an easy acquaintance with Marco, a vacationing writer who first intrigues then seemingly seduces them one by one. Like most Gialli, the title is explained during the course of the film: the interrabang symbol is a gold-plated pendant said to represent doubt and uncertainty in the modern world and there's more than enough of that to go around. Motivation becomes muddled as heiress Anna professes to love her husband despite the infidelities and character flaws while her sister Valeria hates her for keeping too tight a control on the family fortune -and nymphomaniac Margarita doesn't seem to care about anything. Is Marco the escaped convict? Is he a homicidal maniac? Why does Valeria keep quiet when she finds a dead policeman? Margarita also stumbles upon the corpse just before it disappears and the mystery deepens...

INTERRABANG seems to acknowledge its genre when one character, reading a book, is asked if it's a "giallo" and the murder plot, if not examined too closely, eventually comes together in the end with one surprise revelation after another. Like the killer's comeuppance, the film is silly but satisfying and the tale manages to hold the interest despite being set entirely on a small boat and rocky shoreline. Giallo geeks should have a fairly good time but some are bound to be disappointed by the lack of violence and abundance of bathing suits.

Serious attempt by the Disney studios at a character-driven western...

Not-bad adaptation of Paul St. Pierre's book "Breaking Smith's Quarter Horse" by the Disney Studios, a sensitive depiction of the 20th century Native American and his relationship with the white man. Irresponsible rancher Glenn Ford tries talking a young Indian accused of murder into giving himself up and standing trial, though the local law has already decided the kid's guilt and is ready to hang him high. Director Michael O'Herlihy keeps a slow, steady pace throughout--some may think too slow--giving hint this G-rated tale was meant more for young adults than the matinée crowds. The dramatics are sobering if heavy-handed (particularly in the courtroom), though Glenn Ford's tender rascal Smith infuses the picture with heart. The cinematography is rote and disappointing, and the child actors are a bit stiff, but Keenan Wynn relishes his role as a hate-mongering sheriff and Nancy Olson (when she finally stops fretting over financial matters) matches up well with Ford, looking splendid in his older years. ** from ****

The Movie Slaves: An Important Subject that featured Dionne Warwick in here first ever theatrical role

Released theatrically on July 2, 1969,the film wasn't seen elsewhere within its general release until either August of 1969 or 1970,the film "Slaves!" was something to remember for those who went to see this in the theatres when it was released. I was too young to see it then, but I do recall seeing it again when I was in college during a screening of the film in February during Black History Month. "Slaves!" was produced through an independent film company called Continental films, which was by the way the same low-budget film studio that was known for movies with intense subject matter, among them "Black Like Me",and "Nothing But A Man" that were released five years earlier.

"Slaves!" was one of those revisionist dramas set in the Old South that became somewhat of a inept melodrama within itself dealing the horrors of slavery, rebellion and so forth. This was an revisionist melodrama set on a plantation during slavery. The story deals with a Kentucky slave(Ossie Davis),standing up for his rights and for others on the plantation when he is unjustly sold to a bad and tyrannical overseer(Stephen Boyd) whose mistreatment and cruel intentions towards him and the others slaves drives him to foment a slave uprising against his master. Director Herbert J. Biberman depends largely upon heavy dialogue rather than visuals to convey the historical reality of the terrible injustices of slavery. While it is an important subject about the cruel and terrible punishment and the unjustly conditions of human beings, but it is done very poorly and it shows. "Slaves!" upon its release in 1969 came out during the time of civil unrest in America with the violent in the streets of America's largest cities, and the demonstrations that occurred within our neighborhoods not to mention people were still angry and bitter and reeling over the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. and Bobby Kennedy the previous year....not to mention the escalating chaos of the Vietnam War.

"Slaves!" also marked the theatrical debut of R&B songstress Dionne Warwick in her first feature role as "Cassy" one of the slaves that assists Ossie Davis in his revolt against the sadistic and tyrannical master. Warwick's performance here is not to standard, and it shows. It is laughable at times and sometimes outlandish. However, this was Dionne Warwick's first and only attempt at doing theatrical films. But the real disappointment comes from Stephen Boyd who is so over the top here its downright funny. Stephen Boyd went from starring opposite Charlton Heston in "Ben-Hur" to the lowest downpoint in his career as the sadistic overseer. The rest of the cast includes Gale Sondergaard, David Huddleston,Julius Harris,Marilyn Clark, and Nancy Coleman. I do remember this movie, upon its release had a strong "M" rating for several scenes of full frontal nudity, scenes of graphic violence and one intense scene of a rape(that included Ms. Warwick and Mr. Boyd). Had a good subject matter, but within it all,:"Slaves!" was just downright horrible. Running Time: 110 minutes

Flesh and blood

I do not go much for Fulci's horror movies which remain very inferior,IMHO, to those of his Italian colleagues (Dario Argento and Mario Bava). But this one ,by keeping the horror sequences to the minimum (the tortures scenes do not last long fortunately),is eminently commendable.

The cast includes two French actors :one of them ,Georges Wilson ,a very earnest stage thespian ,and the father of Lambert Wilson,is very unexpected here ,and his part of the violent perverse noble who rejoices cause two of his sons are dead so he won't have to feed them anymore and who imprisons his daughter in a dungeon is quite impressive .The other French actor is Raymond Pellegrin in a supporting role.Adrienne Larusso is incredibly beautiful as Beatrice Cenci and Thomas Milian gives a restrained effective performance.

The plot is not easy to catch up with ,because the director blends present and past without the traditional codes .No transition most of the time.Besides ,there are many characters ,and many of them are underwritten (Beatrice's brother for instance)

It's a film of blood and fury, the monsters are everywhere :Francesco Cenci is terrifying but so is the Holy Office whose goal is to appropriate the Cenci's fortune.

Like this?try these....

Review :

Zorba in America

Anthony Quinn basically repeats his signature role from ZORBA THE Greek as a good-natured, large-living gambler and adviser in sexual matters -- invariably in the context of classical mythology.

This is not to say that Daniel Mann has directed a remake. This time, Quinn is married to Irene Pappas and their son is dying. The story's plot concerns Quinn's struggles to raise enough money to take his son to the mountains of Greece, where he imagines the boy will recover. The story is offered deliberately as a classical tragedy written small.

The cast is filled out with fine actors, including Inger Stevens in her last role, and Sam Levene -- best known for playing small-time Runyonesque crooks in the 1940s. However, the point of this movie is to see Quinn playing Zorba struggling against fate. and not an Englishman's civilized repression.

Awesome

This movie is awesome. I don't know why it isn't more popular. the cinematography was fab and the lead actress who played Wynne had this real innocence about her, that was so believable. I thought the storyline was great, it was something unusual. the synopsis based it around Wynne's suspicious feelings towards her brother and the murders, but I found it was about something more than that, about the way different people perceive situations and how different peoples duties and commitments can be seen differently in others eyes.

The rest of the cast were great. I loved the few parts of humour in the film, that lifted from the somewhat dark and serious theme, and showed how unusual the film is. the theme song I Start Counting was awesome. It was an awesome name for the film

I'm totally raving about this film man. It freaking rules! I love it!
