My Favourite Childhood Film

While living in South Africa my dad and I watched many classic films together, and those are special memories. We managed to record "House of Cards" using our very first VCR (in 1983) and I spent many evenings re-watching it until my brother recorded something over it... I was devastated and have been hoping to find it ever since.

Twenty years later I am still a fan and I give it 10/10 because that's my childhood-based feeling for it. No other film I've seen has stayed with me as intensely.

It's difficult to say exactly why I love this film because the memories are so old. My feelings include: excitement, curiosity, urgency, pleasure, amusement, fun, the motivation to see it may times and the crush I have had since on George Peppard! The images are a little mixed: I remember a boat on a lake, a car racing along a winding road and many desperate escapes. Also images of Paris and the Seine. Orson Welles is totally creepy. My visits to Italy have been influenced by scenes from the film - even visiting the Colosseum in Rome.

Hopefully my memories aren't too tainted by all the films I've seen since, if I come across this one again I'm keeping it far away from my brother.

Please don't treat this like a theatrical presentation, because it isn't one

This film is part of someone's personal devotion. I would hope that, however weird or twisted some may consider that devotion to be, any viewing or commenting on this entry would at least accord it the respect that they would hope would be accorded to their own personal devotion, religious or otherwise. It is disrespectful and irrelevant to treat it in the same fashion in which you would treat a film that was intended as a salable entertainment experience for public consumption. It was never intended as a commercial product, or an entertainment experience, or anything remotely similar thereunto. If treating that which is important to others in this sort of mischaracterized and derogatory fashion cannot be avoided, please have the common courtesy not to do so in a public setting. No one who has seen this in the setting in which it was designed to be viewed, or is involved with what it represents, is interested in outside commentary on it.

Incompetent and violent but occasionally endearing

This being a Lindsay Shonteff film you expect the worst but by his standards it's not that bad. Repeat: BY HIS STANDARDS. Which were never terribly high. Clegg is a movie that would like to be a lot better than it is and has lofty ambitions but never has the cleverness to achieve them. The plot is mildly intriguing (old men are getting cards telling them they will soon die) but never really goes anywhere, and to say there's a lack of sympathy for the lead character would be an understatement. He gives us a voice-over narration of a fairly hackneyed nature throughout. The film really runs out of steam by the end - it's like the director couldn't think of any novel way to wrap things up. On the plus side there's some nice location shooting of 1969 London, which looks as beautiful as 1960s London always did. Hard to catch nowadays, Clegg is a movie unlikely to turn up on terrestrial TV

  • maybe on cable in the middle of the night though.

THE CHASTITY BELT (Pasquale Festa Campanile, 1967) **

Comic medieval romp which, as can be surmised from the title, concerns the battle of the sexes; not bad overall, but not sufficiently inspired either (despite willing performers and interesting credits – while an Italian production, the script was co-written by Larry Gelbart!).

The film is generally entertaining, flavorful, even mildly saucy and, yet, emerges as a somewhat hit-or-miss affair – with at least as many flat spots as bright ones (the latter thanks largely to the delightful presence, in both senses of the word, of Monica Vitti…even though, in retrospect, her modern style of acting seems incongruous within this particular milieu!). The male lead is played by Tony Curtis – spoofing his own image in Hollywood films of this type (incidentally, I should be watching him presently in THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH [1954]). Also in the cast is Englishman John Richardson (a "Euro-Cult" regular during this era) as an errant knight who loses a contest with Vitti (disguised as one herself in an attempt to reach Curtis, currently engaged in Holy War) and thus sworn to undying loyalty…even if he's himself eventually revealed to be royalty operating incognito! Nino Castelnuovo appears as Curtis' jovial yet frustrated squire – since the latter is seen exercising his droit de seigneur with the ladies at every opportunity, leaving Castelnuovo "the leftovers"! Towards the end of the film, Hugh Griffith also pops in for an unremarkable bit as a Muslim who abducts both Curtis and Vitti to his palace – one to convert to Islam, the other to add to his harem.

Buoyed by a lively Riz Ortolani score, this takes a light comedy approach to the subject matter wherein Curtis and Vitti's consummation of their relationship is continually thwarted – either by tradition, exigencies of State, or their own selfish pride. Even when the two have finally made up and are willing to honor their marital vows, they first lose the key to the chastity belt and, when eventually retrieved, discover that it has been exchanged with that belonging to the Empress herself!

Review :

a very good movie in the 80's.

I was shocked to see that this movie's rating is so low.

In case you don't know, this movie was super popular when it was played in China during the early 80's. I was still a teenager myself. It left me a good memory. Therefore, I felt the need to give it a 10 and write a comment, since there was only one comment left on this page.

Anyway, back to China, at that time, China didn't have a lot of money to import big Hollywood movies, and the government itself was very strict on which movies were allowed to be imported. So Chinese people had little choices. And at the same time, not many people had TVs at their homes, and there were only a few TV stations in every city. Further, the entertainment industry was only in the early stage. DVD players were not even invented at that time. VCR was probably very expensive, and not many people can afford to buy those tapes, either. So in conclusion, there were not many things people can do for fun.

Movie tickets were cheap at that time, and watching a movie at a movie theater was a big part of people's life, I suppose. Then there came this German movie, it didn't involve any politics, and it was just about an innocent good looking boy with a nice voice who can sing some really beautiful songs. And the story line was not too bad at all.

Unlike the foreign movies played in the US, almost all foreign movies were dubbed in China. So common people can watch the movie easily. The songs were innocent, and not too "capitalist." So those songs were also very popular. Many young kids including myself actually learned how to sing that song "Kleine Kinder, kleine Sorgen" in Chinese. Even today, I still remember how to sing it. And because of that movie, I even searched online for a quite long time, even ordered a CD sang by Heintje all the way from Germany. =) And that is my story about this movie.

" Didn't anyone ever teach you, . . never holster an unloaded gun? "

There are many films which the great actor Clint Walker made and a few became the foundation for the rest. In this film, which is one of his best, called " More Dead than Alive " is directed by Robert Spar and written by George Schench. It relates the unusual story of a multiple murderer, called Cain, (Clint Walker) who has paid the standard price for murdering several men, by serving nearly twenty years in prison. Now that he's out, he finds a job with Dan Ruffalo's (Vincent Price) wild west show. Earning honest money, Clain decides to capitalize on his infamous legacy while at the same time trying to go straight. Unfortunately, Cain's past is slowly creeping in on his peaceful life-style and it only a matter of time before it catches up to him. At the same time, Clain tries to teach Billy Valence an envious and arrogant reputation-seeking gun-slinger (Paul Hampton) not to make the same mistakes he made. The story is a moral one which has influence many a writer and director in the following movie years. For Walker, the least we can add is that this film has become a Classic. ****

Review :

An Unusual and Interesting Spaghetti Western.

"La sfida dei MacKenna" (1970), also known as "Challenge of McKenna" and "Badlands Drifter", is a Spaghetti Western directed by León Klimovsky. The story is thus: an ex-preacher, now a drifter (played by John Ireland) gets into a deadly dispute with powerful Mexican rancher Don Diego (Roberto Camardiel). This is quite a bizarre Western for its genre: there is little action (most of which is well-staged, apart from the anti-climatic final confrontation) and has a lot of Catholic symbolism (the dramatic and striking first scene for example, where a man is hung on a cross against the skyline). The acting, for this wordy movie is excellent: Ireland, while too old for the part is believable and moving as a man who has lost his faith and Robert Woods as Chris, son of Diego, is in one of his best roles. The film is well-served by Klimovsky's direction and the screenplay is strange but riveting. Only one thing blot's this film, and that is the romantic sub-plot that is totally redundant and unnecessary. However, apart from that, this is an unusual Spaghetti Western well-worth seeing.

Soundtrack comments

The movie is very attractive for Olga Schoberova, aka, Olinka Berova's presence and beauty and also for the wonderful soundtrack by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino. With just one movie for Hollywood("Togetherness") Olga has made several European movies, outside Czech Republic. We could say she is sort of famous specially for her roles in German Western movies with her husband Brad Harris. Along with several other soundtracks by this magnificent Italian composer, POPPEA never appeared in LP or CD. The plot is weak and it is just another example of misuse all technicians in Cinecittá to obtain rather feeble laughable situations.

My cup of tea: the pairing of O'Toole and Clark in director Herbert Ross' 1969 musical adaptation of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips"

Caught this 1969 film on cable TCM one night. I remember when I first saw the film in Hong Kong, I really enjoyed the songs and performances by Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark. I love Clark best in Francis Ford Coppola's "Finian's Rainbow" (1968) opposite Fred Astaire, Don Francks and Tommy Steele. Simply ecstatic to learn that finally, this delightful Irish-flavored pot of gold musical is released on DVD! Ah, "it's that old devil moon (in your eyes)."

Peter O'Toole as Mr. Chips - yes, he did sing - quite a deliverance. He may not be a veteran at musical like Rex Harrison, but he inhabited the role marvelously. The scene of him running across the lawn in his cape a-flying reminds me of the PBS series, "To Serve Them All My Days" - a lovable schoolmaster and loving man, he is, 'Mr. Chipey.' Clark and O'Toole somehow gave us just the right mix of spunk and circumstance. The songs and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse are catchy as usual. The tunes of "You and I" and "Walk Through the World (with Me)" stayed with me the most all these years. And there's "What a Lot of Flowers," "And the Sky Smiled," "Fill the World with Love" - not syrupy at all. Sometimes I think if the world is immersed in Bricusse's songs and words, we would overcome all strife on earth and 'lovely' will be all our days! Yes, "Talk to the Animals," too. ("Doctor Doolittle" 1967)

Musicals are a blessing to the world of moviegoers, they are somehow larger than life. Like the music and lyrics by the Sherman Brothers (Richard M. and Robert B.) who gave us "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968) and "Mary Poppins" (1964) - who wouldn't feel absolutely delighted simply uttering "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"? I was tickled by even just one featured song & dance number in the Spanish film "Km.0 - Kilometer Zero" (2000). My all time favorite is French filmmaker Jacques Demy's "Young Girls of Rochefort" (1967) with colorful cast of Catherine Deneuve and (late sister) Francoise Dorléac, Jacques Perrin, Michel Piccoli, Danielle Darrieux, Gene Kelly and George Chakiris singing, dancing to Michel Legrand's music. Long live musicals.

Decent

Bounty hunter Anthony Steffen teams up with shifty, bible-toting rival William Berger, who dresses like a preacher and carries a shotgun with seven barrels, in order to take on a ruthless gang of human smugglers working the Mexican border.

An entertaining, though somewhat standard-issue Italian western, this is well-made and fairly atmospheric, with a neat final gun-down. Steffen and especially Berger are pretty cool too, as is big Mario Brega (of Leone's Dollars trilogy among other films) finally getting to play one of the good guys!

One interesting aspect of the film is the depiction of illegal immigration, the "coyotes", and their primarily well-to-do white enablers as a public nuisances that help in keeping poor Mexicans down. This is a point of view you'll never see in the scared, hypocritical film world of today.

Sleeping beauties.....

...aka "Les Libertines " and "Dave Young" aka Pierre Chenal!!!: : the real name of the director does not appear in the cast and credits ;it speaks volumes about this work!A man who made very good works in the thirties ("La Maison Du Maltais" " L Affaire Lafarge") ,in the forties ("La Foire Aux Chimères" ) and even in the fifties ("Jeux Dangereux")has sunk really low in this soft semi-porno movie, the kind of work which was granted a PG 18 in the seventies but would not offense a thirteen -year old today;people who would like to get an eyeful will be disappointed:there're two or three short love scenes including lesbians and an orgy (but most of the people keep their clothes on).

Dave Young (!) also wrote the screenplay which is primarily a detective story with a gangster on the lam (Robert Hossein: why on earth did he have to get involved in that business?I'm sure it's a movie he WANTS to forget;he and his co-star Marisa Mell always appear dressed),a convalescent home strictly for ladies ,a valuable necklace (170 million Francs no less),and the staff's ominous plans .

A wise fan of Pierre Chenal would pass this up,if only out of respect for this director;fans of Dave Young (if there are any ,which is doubtful) can have a look.
