Review :

Apparently Dracula was a horny Jewish guy.

I haven't seen this film in awhile, but remember it pretty vividly. The film was obviously shot on a really low budget and without any real actors. It has a kind of "Manos" feel to it, but with nudity and even worse special effects. There are bats that are obviously on wires and some pretty cheesy costumes. The guy doing Dracula's voice sounds like an old Jewish man (I don't know where the hell they got the idea to make Dracula Jewish, considering he was Transylvanian). The only thing that I liked about this movie is that it didn't take itself seriously at all.

Count Dracula is living in an abandoned mine in the middle of nowhere. He invites a local reporter to visit him (he goes under the pseudonym of Alucard, hee hee hee, like nobody's ever heard that before). When the inept reporter gets there, Dracula turns him into a pretty crappy looking wolf man, named Irving Jackelmann (enough with the Jewish jokes already). Dracula then sends him out to catch beautiful girls for him to tie up, love up and drain dry. Dracula takes a hankering for the reporter's girl friend and ends up chasing her around his cave.

The opening ten minutes have some really awful stream of consciousness speech by the reporter involving the blue mountains, behind the blue mountains, behind the blue mountains (we get it already). Dracula's accent is just plain annoying. Irving Jackelmann also proves to be pretty bad. The chase scene, for the love of God, was only a nude woman running around the same set for an excruciatingly long time. The nudity can't save it and the jokes, although trying hard to be campy, are just plain dumb.

Avoid unless you can spare a few brain cells.

Ichiro is a highly imaginative, but lonely, boy growing up in urban Tokyo. Every day he comes home to the empty apartment he shares with his railroad worker father and his restaurant hostess mother. His only friends are a toy maker name Shinpei Inami and a little girl named Sachicko. The only other kids that are around is a gang of kids led by a bully named Gabara. To escape his loneliness, Ichiro imagines that he is on Monster Island where he befriends Minya, the son of Godzilla. It is through his daydreams that he watches Godzilla and Minya fight other monsters, including one also named Gabara who is just as bad a bully as the one that is tormenting Ichiro. It is through these daydreams that he learns that it is okay to fight back and face his fears. These lessons also help him to outwit a couple of bumbling bank robbers as well as finally have the guts to stand up to Gabara and his gang.

Not Much Of A Movie

Tenth Godzilla film is also the worst, an incredibly weak, pointless affair about a bullied Japanese boy who daydreams about hanging out on Monster Island with the son of Godzilla, where they try to help each other overcome their respective bullies...Godzilla does what he can to help. Shamelessly uses loads of flashback footage from previous films in a flimsy and desperate attempt to pass this off as a new story. Subplot with the fleeing crooks is silly and contrived. Film seems confused as to whether or not Godzilla really exists, or is just a movie character, which is bizarre. Worthy message about dealing with bullies is lost by the misguided ending with that poor sign painter!

Review :

A Don Knotts Twist

I personally enjoy this film for a few reasons. The style, design, fashion, etc. and time period are awesome. Late 60s and groovy as can be. The whole "Hugh Hefner" thing is happening.

At least in 1969, who would be the best (aka WORST) Love God? Don Knotts, of course. While this movie is a bit different than his other starring films (it's PG-13 for a start), it still has that charm.

Knotts always plays a small town guy getting mixed up in something, and becoming a reluctant hero. It's a formula that works well for him, and we have it in this movie. I think some people do not enjoy this movie because it's just a little different than his other work up to this point, but that's okay.

While this is essentially a sex-comedy, the film is still family friendly overall. There's nothing too blatant, so if you're old enough you'll get it, and if you aren't then that's okay. I recommend this movie, especially if you like Don Knotts, the 60s, or both.

SURPRISE BLACK COMEDY FROM THE U.K.!

I saw this on release (at age 17 or 18) and it reminded me of NOTHING. A year later, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE reminded me of this cool, sinister and hilarious dark comedy from the British Isles. Vanessa Howard (don't know much about her) is prime psycho, post-nubile, upbeat girl and the rest of her family - Sonny, Mumsy, Nanny and all their unwilling and baffled friends make for a tasty stew of late 60's/early 70's pseudo-art..I believe.

A 7 out of 10. Best performance = Vanessa Howard. This film is tough to find on VHS and I don't think it's on DVD, but seek it out if you like clean black humor from England, with teasing, death, witty dialogue and a cast that's born for the task.

Sam Smith is forced to move into the run down Flushing, New York house of his entertainment business partner Ernest Grey after they are evicted from their offices for making pornographic movies and losing all their money and equipment in the process. Ernie originally bought the house on Sam's ill-advice of the property soon being expropriated for a highway, which never happened. Further adding to the house's lack of appeal is that it is located next to a cemetery. As Ernie tries to sell the house, which is run by his devoted but exasperated housekeeper Molly Fletcher who hates Sam, he rents out rooms in it. As soon as Sam moves in, strange occurrences happen in the neighborhood, including a mutilated body being found in the cemetery, and one of their neighbors, Mrs. Potter, being attacked by a howling man. Very Interesting But Kind Of Falls Flat

After watching Rown & Martins Laugh In I expected something better than this. There are a few humor touches but I really thought the scenes with Rowan & Martin doing stand-up including in the opening credits would have been better.

The plot such as it is is strange in that there are no vampires next door even though plot synopsis of the movie says there is. The center of the plot has to do with a large diamond everybody is looking for, yet at the end we are never quite sure if it was found or not.

Some major continuity moments happen when the film jumps from day to night suddenly & some of the scenes ending & the next one beginning make no sense either. This would have been better if they had stuck more to comedy & less with a plot that falls kind of flat.

This film does have some well known television folks. Carol Lynnely was better known for other films & isn't given much script in this. Julie Newmar is best known as a Catwoman on TVs Batman. Even though she is already 36 in this one, for many years she was ageless in the beauty department. She is the only cast member who worked with another comedy team Noonan & (Peter) Marshall during the 1950's.

Leon Askin is better known for Hogan's Heros roles. Robert Reed in a small supporting role is more known for Mr. Mike Brady.

For Rowan & Martin fans, this is OK. Both of them get to use Dick Martins line "I didn't know that!" The opening & closing of the film are bits of whimsy, but the rest is only sporadically funny. Say Good Night Dick.

a campy 70's Mexican movie

i saw this movie when a was very small, but what i remember is that this is basically the story of a young group of friends, who are committing a bunch of petty thefts, but then the opportunity arises for them to score a much bigger prize, things don't go as planed, they end up hiding out in a small Mexican town, during easter week, the towns people are curios to find out something about their new visitors, they come up with the story that there engineering students or something, there in town working on this big protect that will in the long run mean progress for the small town and it's inhabitants, everybody falls for the story, the towns people embrace them, they even invite them to participate in their easter celebrations including the good Friday recreation of the passion of Christ, the leader of the young group of hoodlums is cast as Jesus, all of a sudden one of the young men decides hes had enough of the small town an he decides to go back home, against the advice of his friends, back home the young man is picked up by the cops, he is interrogated, and he quickly gives up his friends, meanwhile back in the small town the young thief's are making themselves at home, there even falling for some of the towns girls, good Friday comes along, and everyone is oblivious to the fact that the cops are on their way along with the young Judas who is ready to finger his former friends, this film is a little campy like a lot of Mexican movies from the 70's, but it's still entertaining.

Review :

It's 1969, and after fleeing to Canada, an emotionally disturbed draft evader teams up with a young hippie (also a draft dodger), and where the duo goes, trouble follows.

The film's shoestring budget is glaringly apparent throughout. Bad sound. Bad lighting. Cheap, washed out film stock. Atrocious direction. Over-the-top acting. Gordon Thomson is painfully wooden as the central character, Alan Evans, who flees to Canada to avoid the draft. Don Stroud provides the film's only believable performance as Richie Kovacs, Evans' fellow draft dodger and hippie sidekick.

Underscoring The Blast's flaws is its syrupy, melodramatic music score, which smacks of the earliest days of soap opera. Criticism aside, the film's most redeeming features are a surprisingly interesting storyline, as well the use of a variety of stunning British Columbia locations.

A Thinking Person's Sci-Fi Film

In this film, the astronauts sent to explore a newly-discovered planet must deal with several dilemmas, and they do so intelligently. The film approaches it's main plot theme in a unique way, and unfolds it gradually, though it can be guessed beforehand.

The acting is very good, though sometimes stiff, as some late-60s acting can be. It can also be somewhat wordy and even melodramatic, especially after the plot theme reveals itself. Visually, it has a scene that resembles one in the previous year's "2001: A Space Odyssey", and that tends to date the movie. Some of the actors went on to star in the 1970 TV show "UFO," which is delightfully campy and worth checking out on DVD.

Despite these small points, the space flight itself is realistic, and considering this was 1969, the scenes inside the cockpit of the spacecraft also had a realistic look. (Look for some 1990s/2000s video technology in use, too!) One thing: I suspect a love scene has been cut, but I can't prove it! It would have been a distraction anyway.

Unlike most Sci-Fi films, this film will make you think about the plot, and that's well worth a look. I'm pleased to have this film in my video library.

Ed, whatever they paid you it wasn't enough

Man, after seeing this I feel like I fell down a flight of stairs. I'm not sure I'm going to recover from the sight of Ed Wood on his hands and knees in a pink nightgown licking a girl's boots. Plus one girl pulls off Ed's underwear, hands them to another girl who proceeds to rub them over her chest. Yikes. Celibacy here I come.

The orgy in the bedroom seems as if it was imagined by a small child who knows what all the parts are but is not sure how they fit together. There is a lot of touching and rolling around but no real sexual contact.

Exactly who did the film-makers think this would appeal to???

A must see. Elvis is an ex-outlaw trying to go straight.

Elvis Presley plays Jesse Wade who tries to leave a gang of thieves led by Victor French. Jesse's neck is branded in order to frame him for stealing a Mexican war cannon. Jesse becomes sheriff as one of the gang is arrested. The bad guys now threaten the town with cannon fire until the leaders little brother is released from jail. Elvis sings only the title song under the credits. This is a different Elvis, with beard and a hat hung low over his eyes. Well known critic, Leonard Maltin, calls this a BOMB! Produced, directed and written by Charles Marquis Warren, this flick is better than the bad rap it has received. Also in the cast are Ina Balin, Solomom Sturgess, and Lynn Kellogg.

A complete disaster of a movie...

If you ever want to check out a complete disaster of a movie, just for laughs, then this is the champion of all champions. What was an accomplished actor like Klaus Kinski thinking of, when he was offered this movie?

Personally speaking, the plot is not even worth discussing, that's if there is even a plot in the film. But two things are worth talking about. Firstly, it has the worst direction, that I have ever seen in a movie. And secondly, the cinematography in it is so bad, that it makes even The Blair Witch Project look fantastic. Summing this movie up is so simple. Badly acted, badly directed and badly photographed. Basically, a complete disaster

This is a film which is extremely hard to find on video. I would consider this to be one of the "holy grails". Perhaps the reason for this is because it's so bad. Rating:0/10.

WARBLING AND FATUITY

This 4th part of the "Lümmel series" is absolutely a peak in fatuity and stuffy morals. In this part not only the usual imbecile humour and ditto scripting, trying to introduce some "freshness" into the by now thread bare format the story (such as there is) is centered around Schager-singer Peter Alexander and a very embarrassing export product from The Netherlands: boy singer Heintje as Alexander's nephew, who is looking for a wife for his uncle as uncle is very clumsy at house keeping - wow, what an exciting subject.

While Heintje torments the ears with his warbling, Peter Alexander - who needed a good director to be acceptable - bores the viewer to death by just being there, but especially during his bloody awful impersonation of Hans Moser. Watching these two you would have give anything to have Hannelore Elsner and even Uschi Glas back. Seeing this part I again wondered why such great comedians as Theo Lingen, Ruth Stephan and Werner Finck (in this part only) kept working in the series; were they forced or is it proof that in the declining German mainstream cinema there was no place for them?

There is a modernized version of Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell" as school play, that combines Tell with Bonanza! O yes, this could have been a fine idea if executed well and with a sense of humour and tongue-in-cheek, but it is of course a very reactionary view on the social changes within society: in this case make fun of those who seriously wanted to modernize the classics. Alexander has to shoot an egg on top of Heintje's head; he should have missed.

Surprisingly decent British horror flick

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this one; I went in expecting nothing and actually found a more than decent horror movie. The film is directed by Michael Armstrong, a British man who would go on to direct the excellent 'Mark of the Devil' a year later. The title is a bit misleading as it makes the film out to be a haunted house movie, when in fact it's closer to the slasher genre if anything. The film takes place in sixties 'swinging' London and focuses on a group of young friends. They're out one night and looking for a party when one of them suggests that they go to an old house that is supposedly haunted. Their party turns sour when one of the friends gets sliced by an unseen killer and, believing they would be in trouble with the local bobby's if they come forward, they decide to dispose of the body themselves. I have to admit that the film is really quite predictable and even though it's a "whodunit", there's never a great deal of mystery surrounding anything in the film. The film is very well shot, however, and the director does a good job of capturing the swinging sixties feel. It's also a very colourful film, which is nice. The acting is rubbish of course, but that's not too important and it all boils down to a nice little twist at the end. I can't say this is brilliant stuff; but it's not bad and worth a look for horror fans.

reminds me of bicycle thief

watched it on DVD a few days back. To be very honest, it felt like i was hit very bad underbelly. The imagery and characters are so real and at the same time surreal. The feeling i had was i don't know why, similar to the one i had after watching bicycle thief. Though Vittorio was more realistic as accepted by all, but for me it was more like a nightmare than reality. And one has the same feeling after watching the movie. It feels that the nightmare would end here but it leads to another.The murders were so gruesome that it felt it was his imaginations or hallucinations.But why did he do it?In all probability he was desperate for shelter and food and this is what he got.But did he do all that he did to keep that moment with him forever and destroy the present,or it was a drunken fantasy he fulfilled to cheer his present life and surrendering to the cruelty of the world.It is a mystery and that is what we all are.

Review :

Chills and thrills

This film is like a fun bad TV movie. It has a thrilling story but the film is marred by the stale performances by the lead actors. If you've never heard of Carol White it's no wonder. She is sweet but gives her part no energy. Her line readings are flat and don't add any life at all to this thriller.

She looks like a bargain basement copy of Julie Christie but with out the charm. This seemed to be her big break in Hollywood after having had some success in England. Here she displays why there was no reason she would ever become a star. Why was she cast in this? There must have been countless other actresses who could have brought some fury to character. This part required a bit of madness and Carol was just too ordinary to deliver. But I suppose a film featuring abortion was a sensitive subject then and perhaps bigger stars did not dare take the part.

The early scenes of the film seem contrived and trite when the characters meet. The changes that show time progressing are quite corny and dated but the late sixties fashions are cool. Carol White, though, looks short with that heavy hair-do which gives the impression that she has no neck.

The film picks up after the dreary first half. There are some neat twists and turns that keep this film from being totally forgotten. The ending is exciting even though the lead actors don't show any tension in their performances. You can't tell if Carol White is terrified or ready to do anything to help her baby. Her character goes to great lengths plot wise but you could never tell by looking at her face.

So, over all it's fun and chilling thriller thanks to the plot but not the actors.

Review :

A sprawling epic that lacks the spectacle to go with the duration...

For the whopping 2 hours and 45 minutes it lasts, Samurai Banners really has little to recommend it. Long movies are fine if that's how much it takes to communicate what you have to say, but there's a good 45 minutes here that could have been clipped and it would still be the same movie.

Furin Kazan (as is the original title) was the name of the war banners used by one of the greatest warlords of 16th century Japan, Takeda Shingen, lord of the Takeda clan. The name is derived from Sun Tzu's famous book "Art of War", meaning "Swift as the Wind, Silent as a Forest, Fierce as Fire and Immovable as a Mountain". The movie recalls the early years of Takeda leading up to the defining battle of Kawannakajima. If the name is familiar, that's because it's the same character depicted by Tatsuya Nakadai in Akira Kurosawa's Kagemusha (there in his later years). Indeed, coming near the end of a prolific career, in many ways this is Hiroshi Inagaki's Kagemusha.

Where SB falters is that it spends far too much time in namesdropping and planning battles than it does in actually showing them. Lots of build-up but little as far as spectacle goes. A mixture of politics, war strategy, romance and drama, this jidai-geki desperately calls for something to spice things up. The battle scenes are few and far between and really not very well choreographed. The final battle scene is particularly anti-climactic, more so after the massive built-up that leads to it. There's nice use of colours in banners and some beautiful exterior shots but much like Kagemusha, it feels like a dress rehearsal for a better movie. The extras seem to be going through the motions instead of giving it their all. Unlike Kagemusha though, this one doesn't have the deep character drama to go with it.

Fortunately for us and perhaps the only thing that holds things together, is the typically fantastic Toshiro Mifune giving another solid performance. Playing Takeda Shingen's right hand, an ambitious man with dreams of a big, unified Japan under Takeda's banner, he's consistently great. Of course he doesn't do anything he hasn't done better under Kurosawa's direction, but he's always a pleasure to watch.
